St. Edith Mat Makers: Turning Plastic Bags into Hope

Every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m., a dedicated group of St. Edith parishioners gathers together with a simple mission: to turn ordinary plastic bags into something that provides comfort, dignity, and hope to those experiencing homelessness.

The St. Edith Mat Makers collect and transform plastic grocery bags into durable sleeping mats and bags. Through a process of cutting, looping, and crocheting the plastic bags into “plarn” (plastic yarn), the group creates useful items that can be distributed to people in need.

What might seem like an ordinary plastic bag becomes something much more meaningful—a mat that provides a cleaner, more comfortable place to rest, or a sturdy bag that can be used to carry personal belongings.

But this ministry is about more than making mats and bags. It is about seeing Christ in others and putting our faith into action. The Mat Makers provide practical help while also showing compassion to people who are often overlooked or forgotten.

The group welcomes anyone who would like to join them. No experience is necessary! Whether you know how to crochet or have never picked up a crochet hook, there is a way you can help. The group is happy to teach you and put you to work at whatever level is comfortable for you.

Come spend some time with fellow parishioners, learn a new skill, and help turn something as simple as a plastic bag into a gift of warmth, comfort, and dignity.

Bring your helping hands and your heart for those in need. Together, we can make a difference—one mat and one bag at a time!
