Heather (Nofar) Shina, Music Ministry Director

Heather Shina, Music DirectorGrowing up in a musical family, Heather Nofar Shina is the second of five sisters who sing and play the piano and organ.  She has served as the Director of Music Ministries at St. Edith Catholic Church since 2004.  Heather married the love of her life, Harry Shina in 2013, and has three beautiful girls: Helena, Hazel, and Havana.

Over the past 15 years that Heather has served as the Director of Music the music program has grown extensively, adding the Handbell Choir, In Praise, and Young Adults.  In addition, there are now annual concerts that draw in hundreds of people.

Heather has performed in numerous choruses with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the International Chorus in Graz, Austria, where she studied choir conducting with Dr. Rodney Eichenberger.  She has also played in master classes with Olivier Latry and David Higgs, and has performed as guest organist/vocalist throughout Michigan.  She has taught general music and piano classes at Cornerstone Academy in Detroit, served as a teacher’s assistant at Wayne State University, and professor of music at St. Clair County Community College. Many of Heather’s pupils have won regional and national awards in music and have also won full organ scholarships to study at elite universities.

Heather’s previous organ instructors include Dr. Norah Duncan IV and Dr. Ronald Prowse.  After completing her Bachelor of Music degree at Wayne State University in Church Music and Organ Performance in 2003, Heather was awarded a scholarship to study at the University of Michigan where she completed the Master of Music program as an organ student of Dr. James Kibbie in 2006.
